This Thursday: Learning How to Talk

Dear Kenneth,The more I do this work, the less certain I am about anything. But there are a few things of which I’m convinced:

  • The climate crisis, and the broader E4 crises of which it’s a (deadly) symptom, is the most pressing challenge we face.
  • There is no “solving” this crisis. We are going to have to navigate our way through inevitable but unpredictable catastrophes, while curtailing fossil fuels drastically to ensure a survivable, just future.
  • Responding to the climate emergency is going to require each of us to fundamentally change how we live and work together. Our single biggest asset is the strength of our communities.

Despite all of that, I still find it difficult talking about the climate crisis with people in my extended family and community. In fact, the more concerned I become, the more challenging I find it.

Which is why I’m so excited to be hosting a conversation this Thursday with Karin Kirk and Dr. Susanne Moser, experts in climate change communication, on how we can talk about the climate crisis in a way that inspires collective action. Karin and Susi are going to help me, and you, if you’re able to join us, with concrete ideas for engaging people at different ends of the spectrum — from those who are open but not yet convinced, to those who are so overwhelmed with concern that they’ve either shut down or responded in unhealthy, unproductive ways.
